Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College is once again in the news. The institute has now sent the application again to the National Medical Commission (NMC) seeking permission to start the MBBS course for the academic session 2026-27. According to the officials of the institute, this application has been made after completing all the necessary formalities. Under this, a fee of about Rs 10 lakh has also been deposited for inspection and other procedures. Now the institute hopes that the NMC team will take a decision on this after inspection in the coming months.
According to reports, on January 7 this year, NMC had withdrawn the permission to run MBBS course in this medical institute. A few hours later, the college administration had asked the students studying there to return home. After this decision, there was a lot of anxiety among the students and their families. Many students had said that they were suddenly asked to leave the college, which created uncertainty about their studies.
There were 50 students in the first batch
The first batch of MBBS was started in this medical college, in which a total of 50 students were admitted. Later, when the permission was cancelled, these students were sent to other colleges to continue their studies. These students were accommodated in seven new government medical colleges of Jammu and Kashmir. Of these, 22 students were given places in three medical colleges of Kashmir Valley and the remaining students were given places in four colleges of Jammu region, so that their studies were not affected.
The decision came amid protests
At that time this matter was also in a lot of controversies. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti, a group of some organizations, had protested against the students taking admission in the college. The committee said that this institute has been built with the donations given by the devotees coming to Mata Vaishno Devi temple, hence there should be some conditions regarding the students studying here. During the protest, it also came into discussion that out of the 50 students included in the first batch of the college, 44 students were from the Muslim community. However, many students said that NMC’s decision is being linked to these protests.

NMC had pointed out shortcomings
When the National Medical Commission had withdrawn the permission of the college, it had said in its order that there were some important deficiencies in the institute. These shortcomings were said to include issues like infrastructure, number of teachers and availability of patients in the hospital. However, the officials of the institute did not consider these allegations to be completely true. He said that the facilities are available in the college and they are being improved with time.
Now the facilities are being strengthened
Officials of the institute say that now more preparations are being made than before, so that next time there is no shortage of any kind in the inspection. For this, Narayana Superspeciality Hospital is also being linked to this medical institution. It is being told that the process of bringing the management of the hospital under the institute has started. From April 1, all the doctors and employees of this hospital will work with the medical institute. This will increase both the number of patients and medical facilities in the hospital.
