Benefits Of Protein And Micronutrient Rich Rice: White polished rice, which is a part of the plate of almost every Indian home, is now going to take a new look in terms of health. Scientists have prepared such a designer rice, which is not only rich in protein and essential micronutrients, but also has a low glycemic index. That is, it will increase blood sugar more slowly than normal rice, which can be beneficial for diabetic patients and those who want to keep their weight under control.

Steps towards reducing diseases

This special rice has been developed by the National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology working under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. According to the institute, essential nutrients like iron, folic acid and vitamin B12 have also been added to this rice. Anemia and vitamin deficiency are a major public health problem in India, hence this initiative is considered an important step towards nutritional security.

For whom is rice useful?

This rice with low glycemic index can be especially useful for those people who feel hungry frequently or whose blood sugar fluctuates rapidly. The high protein content can help in muscle strength, energy and feeling full for a longer period of time. Experts believe that if everyday staple foods are made nutritious, it can be easier to fight malnutrition and lifestyle diseases.

What is the goal?

PTI reports that this technology will be licensed to Tata Consumer Products Limited and SS Soul Foods of Tamil Nadu. CSIR-NIIST Director Dr. C. Anandharamakrishnan has also received the Tata Transformation Prize 2024 for this new discovery. He says the goal is to develop a staple food that improves nutritional levels without compromising taste and tradition.

The institute has also started the process of handing over this technology to the industry, so that this product can reach the common consumers. Apart from this, other new discoveries related to nutrition and health have also emerged. These include low-sodium salt, which is capable of reducing sodium content by up to 86 percent while maintaining taste. It can be helpful in reducing the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. Technologies have also been developed to preserve the nutrients in fruits and vegetables for a longer period, thereby increasing their shelf life and maintaining their nutrition.
