The acids made by bacteria make small holes in the enamel, which grow larger over time. If not treated timely, this infection can reach the inner layer of the tooth and cause pain, infection and even tooth loss.

However, the body itself repairs this damage to some extent. Minerals like calcium and phosphate present in saliva help in strengthening the teeth again, which is called remineralization. But if sweets are eaten repeatedly throughout the day or the mouth remains dry, then this balance gets disturbed and the harm starts increasing.

To prevent this, it is important to limit sugar intake. It is considered better to take sweet things with food instead of eating them throughout the day. Apart from this, chewing sugar-free chewing gum, drinking more water and brushing and flossing regularly helps in keeping teeth healthy. Experts believe that it is not necessary to give up sugar completely, but with balance and proper oral care, its harm can be reduced to a great extent.
