teaser of Nitesh Tiwari‘S Ramayana Starring Ranbir Kapoor It has received a divided response, with a section of social media criticizing its VFX as “video game-like”. Amidst the ongoing debate, Hrithik Roshan has come out in support of the filmmakers and urged audiences to watch visual effects with more awareness.
“Bad VFX exist… but so does the vision”
Taking to Instagram, Hrithik acknowledged that poor VFX can be disappointing, but stressed that the intention and scale of filmmaking should also be recognised. He wrote, “Yes, bad VFX exists. It’s so bad sometimes that it’s painful to watch. Especially for me… and especially when it’s a film I’m a part of.”
However, he immediately shifted focus to the effort behind such projects. “Today there are some special people among us, like the producers of films Kalki, Baahubali,Ramayana… is my hero. He has the courage and vision to do what has never been done – all for the love of cinema.”Reflecting on his childhood inspiration from films like Back to the Future, Hrithik highlighted the larger purpose behind the ambitious VFX-heavy cinema. He shared, “For me it is noble. The intention in itself deserves appreciation! I am proud of my fellow Indians. What I would do to be a part of such dreams even as a facilitator.”
‘You may like one style more than another, but neither one is wrong’
Addressing the criticism surrounding Ramayana, Hrithik explained that not all VFX is meant to look photorealistic. He wrote, “In my little understanding…creators have adopted various VFX styles to bring their vision to life.”“You may like one style more than another, but neither one is wrong,” he said, comparing it to all the films’ animation styles and cinematic choices. The actor continued to define what, in his view, a truly bad visual effect is.“Bad VFX occurs when a film promises ‘photorealism’ but is unable to fully live up to it… Or the promise is storybook style but they fail to make it beautiful enough,” he explained.“But to say that the storybook style doesn’t look photorealistic isn’t fair. Because it wasn’t supposed to be.”
‘Maybe it’s a style you didn’t expect?’
Hrithik ended his note by urging audiences to rethink how they criticize films.“So sometimes when you say ‘bad VFX.’ “Maybe it’s a style you didn’t expect?” He has written.“So next time just don’t ask, ‘Is this real?’ First ask, ‘Is this right for the story?’… debate it. But debate it with awareness.”Directed by Nitish Tiwari, Ramayan stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman and Sunny Deol as Hanuman.Ramayan: Part I is gearing up for a grand Diwali release this year.
