Why IVF Success Rate Is Lower In Black Women: Is IVF not as effective for black skinned women as it is for other women? This question has been a topic of discussion among scientists and doctors for a long time. A new study that has recently come out has revealed some shocking facts on this issue, which deepen this debate.
For nearly two decades, fertility experts have been trying to understand why Black women have lower successful birth rates after IVF. Earlier it was believed that the reason for this could be the excessive presence of fibroids in their body, which hinder the implantation of the embryo. Apart from this, the body’s different response to hormonal injections given during IVF was also considered a reason.

What came out in the research?
However, a large study recently published in the journal Fertility and Sterility has partially challenged this notion. In this study, more than 2.46 lakh IVF cycles were analyzed, in which about 7 percent of the cases were of black women. Research found that black women responded slightly better to ovarian stimulation drugs than other groups. The interesting thing was that the quality of the embryos produced from the eggs of these women was also found to be good. That means no major shortcomings were seen in the initial process of IVF. Factors like age, body mass index, hormone levels and infertility related problems were also taken into consideration in the research.
The results are shocking
Despite this, there was a difference in the end result i.e. successful birth rate. While this rate was about 60 percent among white women, it was only about 45 percent among black women. This difference has become the biggest question for scientists. Experts believe that there is some factor somewhere which is affecting the success in the last stage. According to Iris Tien-Lynn Lee, an OB-GYN expert at the University of Pennsylvania, “There is clearly a barrier preventing this process from reaching its final goal.”
There may be many hidden reasons
The researcher also says that there could be many hidden reasons behind this, such as abundance of fibroids in the uterus or environmental factors, which affect black women more. Tarun Jain, professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, believes that such studies also help in understanding the shortcomings of the healthcare system. According to her, Black women often face poor outcomes in health care, whether it’s motherhood or infertility treatment.
