Varun Dhawan’s daughter is suffering from which disease, know its symptoms and how dangerous is it?

Varun Dhawan Daughter DDH Disease: Famous Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan recently gave information about a health problem of his daughter. He told that his daughter has hip dysplasia i.e. Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH). On hearing this news, people’s desire to know about this disease increased.

This problem is not considered very common, but it is a serious problem of hip joint in children. If it is not treated on time, it can affect the child’s ability to walk and may lead to problems like pain, difficulty in walking or early arthritis in the future. In such a situation, let us know what DDH is, its symptoms, causes and how it is treated. How dangerous is this?

What is DDH?

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a condition in which a child’s hip joint does not develop properly. Normally, the top of the thigh bone fits tightly into the hip socket. In DDH this fitting becomes loose, unstable or sometimes completely dislocated. This problem is not always visible at the time of birth, hence timely screening of the baby is very important. If treatment is done on time, children can live a normal life and there is no problem in walking.

How common is this disease?

Around 0.5 percent to 1.5 percent children worldwide have this problem. In some cases, mild instability resolves on its own, while some children require treatment. The incidence of cases in India is 0 to 2.6 in every 1000 children. This figure is not known accurately, because in mild cases it gets ignored. Girls, children born for the first time, children born in breech position or people with a history of DDH in the family can be more affected by this disease. In India, most children are diagnosed at the age of 1 or 2 years, which is much late than the appropriate age. Therefore, timely screening of the new born baby is very important so that the problem can be detected at the right time and treatment can be started.

Its symptoms and how dangerous is it?

Doctors often identify this problem in newborn babies during regular checkups. The child’s parents often do not see any signs initially. In slightly older children, uneven leg length, limited movement of one leg or difficulty in bending the knees, and uneven thigh folds may be seen. In late diagnosed cases, children start walking late, limping, having an abnormal gait or one leg may appear shorter.

Treatment of DDH

DDH is treatable and often completely cured, especially if identified early. Treatment of New Born Baby: The hip is kept in the right place by using a soft brace so that the hip develops normally. Whereas children aged between 6 months to 2 years are treated with closed reduction, that is, the hip is brought to the right place without operation. After this it is placed in a cast. Children older than 2 years may require surgery to realign the hip. If treated on time, most children do not need surgery.
